This model is the second P-40 Warhawk from GMP, and it was flown by John Landers before he went "big time" in his very famous Big Beautiful Doll
P-51, which is due out in 2007 from GMP as well (I plan to snag it to go with this model). While not as popular as GMP's first P-40, Robert Scott's Old
Exterminator, I do like this scheme better. The camo livery is very pleasing to the eye, and the noseart is certainly unique -- the plane is not very well
known, and pics of the real deal are hard to come by, which is another reason why I like the model. While more famous for his ETO exploits in the BBD,
Landers "cut his teeth" in the P-40 against the Japanese, scoring 5 kills in this bird.
Like the Old Exterminator, this is a beautifully made model. Then engine, in particular, is amazingly detailed, as is the cockpit, which has real cloth
straps on the pilots seat -- not to mention a gorgeous instrument panel. The wheels are supposed to lower and retract by pushing a button on the
bottom of the plane. However, this has never worked for me without a great deal of prodding (and I wouldn't recommend using the feature anyways as
the gears are plastic and look fragile. The wheels are sturdy and made of rubber, and the model has a high metal content -- even the prop is metal.
The three antenna wires look a bit bizarre -- I've not seen a P-40 with the wires coming from the wings to the tail before, and I am not sure this is
correct. Regardless, it's a fragile setup -- on my model the wires have broken loose from the tail (see pic). It's also bizarre that you can remove the top
gun bay access panels, but there's really nothing to see. Presumably this is where the ammo was loaded, but it must have been done differently than
on the P-51 as you cannot see the belts of ammo. (Anyone know what the deal is with this?) And a book is not included with this model, as is the case
with several of the P-51s.
Niggles aside this model is a homerun for GMP, and I have no hesitation in giving it my highest recommendation.
Highly Recommended!

P-40 Warhawk "Texas Longhorn"    #GMP3502702, Released: Fall 2006
You can remove the gun bay panels on the tops of the wings but there ain't much to see -- why bother?
