HM's typical heavy black wash for the panel lines is absent on this model -- with perhaps some faint traces on the underside and stabs. I wish it was
weathered a bit more.
This is Hobby Master's first 110 (a late war version) and only the second 110 in 1:72 available as of January 2008. (Corgi is expected to release an
early war 110 in 2008.) The other model is from IXO, which makes this the best available 110 right now. The craftmanship is at least slightly better,
and the fit/finish a step up. The matte finish also makes the model look more realistic to me.
That said, this model is not without its issues -- which my pals at the Model Hangar were quick to point out to me (I confess to not knowing a
great deal about this airframe.) For starters, the mottled camo paint scheme should be feathered -- not as distinctly "blotchy" as it is here. There
are no crewmen, the canopy doesn't fit snugly and there is a visible gap at the front windscreen, and the detail of the rear guns and accessories
could be better (all the supports are a bit thick, for example). Plus the canopy frame is simply too thick as well (this is one area IXO's is better).
Finally, the aileron balance horns on the underside of the wings are on backwards (d'oh!).
Now the good -- it's still better than IXO's, the model has good overall fit/finish in terms of assembly -- with the exception of the canopy frame fit
and a visibile gap where the gun pod mounts to the fuselage (it comes joined). And it's a nice example of a late war workhorse 110 that had some
fleeting success used in mass formations against allied bombers. If you've been hankering for a 110 and are not all that particular about the nitty
grittys I think it is worth picking up. It displays well with all my other 1:72 models and looks good in the display cabinet. Hopefully, HM will address the
concerns listed above with subsequent releases of different paint schemes, which they've done in the past with other models.
