Extremely well-known and highly regarded for
its diecast vehicles, GMP has now tossed its hat
into the military aircraft ring. The kicker is that its
models are being produced in 1:35 scale, and
they feature a extreme level of detail that you
simply can not find anywhere else.
There are six Mustangs in the line so far -- the
first one, the venerable P-51D "Old Crow" flown
by the infamous Bud Anderson -- came out in
2004 and is now sold out. This model is now
highly collectible and I expect it will continue to
rise in value.
And, in September of 2005 GMP released the
second mold in the series, a P-40E Warhawk.
Two liveries are now available, and I have both
of them: Robert Scott's Old Exterminator and
John Landers Texas Longhorn. In addition to all
of the detail found in the Mustangs, the P-40 has
self-actuating landing gear! Press a button and
watch it unfold, which sounds pretty cool. I say
sounds because it doesn't work without help on
either of my models, but it's a gimmick really.
The models average around $150 in terms of
MSRP, which while not cheap represents a
good value considering the size of the model, all
the moving parts, the limited run, and the book
that is included with most of them. I suspect
these will command nice after-market prices
down the road as they sell out at retail.
If you like to "play" with your models, then you
simply must have one of these planes: there are
a lot of movable parts:
- Fully functioning Landing Gear, Flaps,
Rudder, Ailerons, Radiator Exhaust and
Bypass doors
- Sliding Canopy
- Opening Wing Gun access doors
- Removable Engine Cowling to expose
highly engine
- External Drop Tanks or 500 lb. Bombs
(varies per model)
- And with most models you get a Special
Edition Aces Book, which is pretty nice,
too.
I like to say that if I could have just one
diecast plane, the Old Crow would be it. It is
impressive, and you can even purchase an
optional diorama with three crew figures that
really sets if off nicely for display.
